Research institutes like CERN need reliable and state-of-the-art COTS computer platforms for their scientific experiments. For specific experiments, electronics designs must even be SEU resistant to avoid computing errors caused by effects similar to cosmic radiation.

In addition, the environmental conditions for certain scientific experiments (arctic, deep sea, desert, space) can be harsh, and volume and weight might be a challenge, so that computers must be robust, compact and lightweight. Conduction cooling can be a method to cope with extreme temperatures.

FPGA-based designs allow individual, customized implementation of very dedicated scientific functions also for smaller volumes.
