Rugged box computers from MEN: The BC50M and the RC1.

About Box Computers

MEN’s product family of rugged box computers comprises two fanless and maintenance-free control units designed for harsh, mobile, mission-critical applications in transportation, avionics, industrial automation and medical engineering.

The BC50M is based on a new modular concept for box and display computers. It is powered by an AMD Embedded G-Series APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) with advanced graphics features provided by its Radeon™ HD 6310 graphics processor. Its two DisplayPort® interfaces support resolutions of up to 2560x1600 each. The unit’s rugged enclosure provides protection up to IP40.

Designed for even more demanding environments, the RC1 is part of the MIPIOS® family of extremely rugged IP67-compliant products. It is powered by an Intel® Atom™ Z510 CPU. All I/O signals are available at the unit’s front via various types of rugged M12 connectors. A second power input makes it possible to connect a backup power source (e.g., a battery) that is automatically used in case of power failure on the main power input. The RC1 is prepared for wall or DIN rail mounting. MEN also offers models featuring a 3.5-inch display with touch functionality, meant primarily for service purposes.

Both RC1 and BC50M offer two Ethernet ports on rugged M12 connectors (Fast and Gigabit Ethernet, respectively). A flexible I/O concept enables the addition of further interfaces like CAN bus, RS485, IBIS or binary I/O at the front panel. Wireless functions like Bluetooth, WLAN, WIMAX, GSM/GPRS or UMTS can be added via PCI Express® Mini Card and SIM card slots and optional antenna connectors.

The systems’ design is always realized without fans, using conductive cooling to spread the dissipated heat to the outside of the housing and enabling operation at temperatures from -40 up to +85°C. Each box PC is equipped with a wide-range power supply unit compliant with the EN 50155, class Tx railway standard (power interruption class S2) and is designed to meet the e1 requirements of the German Federal Motor Transport Authority.
